Woodchucks are stocky, chubby looking ground squirrels and in some parts known as the land beaver because of their resemblance but with a short rounded tail. They have a brown coat that can have lighter tipped hairs making a frosted appearance of gray to yellow. Their lengths are 16-26 inches long including their 6 inch tail and weighing from 4-10 pounds.

Woodchucks become sexually mature at twelve months and breeding occurs in early spring. Gestation is about thirty days when as many as nine but more commonly three to five young are born hairless and blind. At two weeks their hair begins to show and by week three they begin to crawl. At four weeks their eyes open and by week five the young are fully active. Adolescence is short for a woodchuck being weaned at six weeks and then driven off by the mother. In the wild their average life span is about six years.

Woodchucks can be found active at many times during the day and occasionally at night. Spring and autumn months bring activity to its peak from mid to late day. The summer months bring activity mostly in the morning and afternoon. Dens are well constructed and may have as many as five entry points with tunnels as deep as five feet and extending as long as 45 feet. Hibernation begins in October and lasts until sometime between mid-March and April.
